I've had around a 15 kill streak before, give or take a few.

I've played for a while now too, I'm just not that great. I've gotten 2 profiles to level 55, the third one got wiped off my hard drive and I'm working on my fourth. It's a great game and addicting too!

From what I've heard about this, this is the best mATX motherboard that overclocks very well. It even is fine clocking quad core processors with a breeze. It isn't that costly compared to other ATX motherboards either.

I don't think there are any mATX motherboards that support PCI-E 2.0 or DDR3 yet, but I am not sure.

You should watercool this one! I love seeing small cases with a big radiator on it. If I didn't already have my desktop, I would surely build myself a mATX rig that is completely watercooled.

Nice rigs guys. This summer, I plan to post up my work in progress benching station.

My whole computer is apart, just need to file some aluminum and get some tools before I start cutting my boards.

Hrm...I have one of each.

8800M GTS in the laptop.

And a X1950XT 512MB in the desktop.

If I had the choice to buy a new graphics card right now, I would go nVidia. But since the ATi 4XXX series is coming out soon, I may have to wait as they are said to be mighty powerful.

The case is a nice and roomy case to work with watercooling on, but I wouldn't get the watercooling kit included with the case. Thermaltake, while we love their cases and air coolers, have a horrible reputation for water cooling.

If you could just buy the case by itself and build your own water cooling kit, you would be much better off than that Thermaltake kit. If you want, you could give me the budget for water cooling parts and a shop you will buy from and I will try to piece together a kit for you.

The hard drive is probably dead. Hard drives can't handle a shock like falling to the ground. Try to put a spare hard drive in and see if that is the cause.

The Act Labs shifter does have a sequential shifter plate. Much cheaper than the Frex and VGT one too.

Wow! You sure do have a good overclock from stock 1.66GHz.

I'm running my E6300 @ 2.89GHz (413x7) and 1.375v (in BIOS). Pretty high voltage for my clock, I would love to be running 1.3v with my current clock. vDroop does make the actual quite lower, though.

What do you guys think about this time? Same cooling as before, just higher CPU clock and lower RAM clock with tighter RAM timings.

I've been told that with 3GB (1x1GB + 1x2GB), only 2GB will run in dual channel and the rest is just there. I have 3GB of RAM on this laptop, and I know it is running in dual channel.

Either way, 3GB>2GB.

Few links to support this.

I've been reading up on water cooling lately and I may have some sugguestions for Franky.

If you want quiet with a watercooling setup, look into a thin radiator in addition to a few quiet fans. A Swiftech MCR220-QP/MCR320-QP radiator coupled with a few Yate Loons would do pretty well cooling the CPU and GFX, and still be on the quiet side.

Choosing a decent CPU block and GPU block would also help all this cooling. D-Tek or Swiftech make very good CPU blocks, just choose one that is enough for your needs. Same thing applies with GPU blocks, there are many choices available for the 8800's. One of the best performing GPU blocks is the Swiftech MCW-60, and it will work with a 8800.

With 2 GPU's and a pretty fast CPU, you may want to run one loop, you may want to run two loops. If you get a strong enough pump, the two loop method may be better and help a bit on the cooling. Just a few T-lines or the less restrictive Y-lines will get all that flowing nicely.

I understand that this might get a bit confusing, so if anything needs clarification in this post, just ask.

From what I remember, the 9600M GT will probably have a bit better performance than a 8700M GT now. I don't recall people saying it will be as good as the 8800M's right now, but the performance will be very close to a 8800M GTS.

Well, I have bought myself a Gateway P-6831 FX for $1200 + tax. It also came with a free game, I chose Call of Duty 4. I'm pretty happy with the decision, these are the specs.
Intel Core 2 Duo T5450
3GB RAM

The fact I need it to last for 3 years. Also, I may not know what games might go on it in those 3 years with the laptop.

Oh man...I just checked and noticed how far off I was with this money stuff Sorry about that, now I understand your deal. That seems pretty good for under $1000, go for it.

Well, Lenovo right now is having 16% off their ThinkPad T series models. The one I want with a T9300, nVidia Quadro NVS 570M and a few more things can be configured for about $1400 which is about 700 euros. If you have a deal like that in Italy, you may want to check it out.

Oh, and about your Dell, can't you get a bit better of a processor for about that same price? A Dell Vostro 1500 has about those same features, but I remember I configured mine with a T7500 for $1300, roughly 650 euros.

When you buy a laptop, it usually doesn't come with the best or the most updated video drivers. Many people also don't suguest using the standard nVidia drivers either. www.laptopvideo2go.com is where most people go to get video drivers, and those are usually more stable and better than the nVidia ones.

It should run fine. Best bet would be to update to the latest video drivers for your OS from laptopvideo2go. Should fix most bugs and usually does increase some performance.

I can't give you a LFS frame rate, but I do have 3DMark06 scores for both the cards.

Go7600 GT: 2800
8600M GS: 2552

Judging by the scores, the 7600 is the faster card.

Yes, but if I want more future proof, it will usually cost me more presently. What I'm worried about right now is that since I will be buying in the next 6 or so months, I don't want to buy a Santa Rosa laptop just before the release of the Montevina.

Eurocom is a nice place to buy laptops like that over in Europe. Site is : www.eurocom.ca. I believe they do have the Compal HEL80 in their site too, look around in there.

Yes, but will I need the new platform? The most I plan to do is surf the web, chat, do schoolwork and play LFS on that. At most I will have LFS, Trillian, Opera and OpenOffice Writer up. Unless LFS gets so high tech, I don't think I need that much power and don't want to wait that long. Correct me if I'm wrong, but do I have the right idea on the LFS part? How about your opinions about the choice?

I believe a 8600M GS will run LFS fine, and if you push it a bit with RivaTuner, it will fun even better. If you could get a better card, you should as it will have a better chance of running LFS in the future if it needs a higher end graphics card.

As you may know, I made a post about buying a new laptop a few months ago. Well, I never got that as a present, and am looking for one again. This one will probably is bought around April or possibly over to early summer.

I have somewhat made my choices of a notebook, but this is pretty much what I'm looking for. It needs atleast a 8600M GT, or equivalent card. DDR2, DDR3; either choice will work but DDR3 is what I'm leaning towards as it may give the laptop a few more months of use. I would like it to last atleast 2 years, preferably 3 years. I will either get the T8100 or the T9300 Penryn processors, I haven't decided yet. I would like a 7200 RPM drive, as I don't need it that big, so a high storage 5400 RPM drive will be out of the question. They are usually more expensive anyway, even if there is better performance. I will have a budget of $1500, which will be flexible up to $1600.

The choices are either a Compal JFL92/Sager 2092; Lenovo ThinkPad T61P; or a Dell Vostro 1500.

Now I know that the Dell only has the T7xxx processors available, but since I am not buying urgently, I can wait until Dell makes it available, if they do. These are all 15.4in. notebooks, and I do not plan to go any bigger than a 15.4in. notebook.

My question for you guys is which of these would you prefere? Do you guys have another option for me to look at? Keep in mind, I would like to keep the buying within the USA, so the European Zepto notebooks are out of the question.

Also, I would like to note that the new Intel Montevina platform will be coming out in the next 6 or so months. It would replace the current Santa Rosa platform all these notebooks are running on. Should I buy a Santa Rosa laptop before the release of the new Montevina's in '09, or should I wait until I get more information about them?

Sorry for the long post, if anything needs clarification, please post.

I think you are mistaken, Jakg. The 8600M GT has these specs.

16 Pixel Shaders 16 Vertex Shaders 475 MHz Core Clock 700 MHz Memory Clock 128-bit Memory bus and uses DirectX 10

The 7600 GT has these specs:

12 Pixel Shaders 5 Vertex Shaders 500 MHz Core Clock 600 MHz Memory Clock 128-bit Memory bus and uses DirectX 9C

The 7600 GT and 8600M GT both have DDR2 memory type, but certain 8600M GT's have GDDR3 memory. The GDDR3 can overclock better and are already faster than the DDR2 alternative. Only downside to that is the GDDR3 comes in 256MB and the DDR2 comes in 512MB.

Edit: I forgot to add, the chart I got this info from lists them performance wise. The 8600M GT is just above the 7600 GT, even though the 3DMark04-06 scores of the 8600M GT is much better. Another card that is litterally the same as a 8600M GT is the Quadro FX570M (Quadro NVS 570M), usually found on the business laptops.
